Abstract

Hamiltonian dynamics is an important mathematical framework for modeling many types of physical processes. One fundamental challenge is to understand in what way we can extend beyond Hamiltonian dynamics to model thermodynamics. One suggestion is that of so-called metriplectic mechanics. In this talk, I explain what this is and how one can construct a metriplectic bracket on a Poisson manifold without needing to introduce additional structures beyond the already existing Poisson bracket.
